Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about Yossed.
What is Yossed?
Yossed is a social music discovery platform. Think Letterboxd for music - you rate albums, tracks, and artists, write reviews, follow people with similar taste, and join communities around the music you love.
Is Yossed free?
Yes. Yossed is completely free to use. Create an account, start reviewing, and build your taste profile. No credit card needed.
How do I sign up?
Head to the signup page, enter your email and choose a username. If we're in beta, you may need an access password from an existing member.
What's the sauce rating system?
Instead of stars, Yossed uses sauce cans (). Rate music from 1 to 5 sauce. It's our way of keeping reviews flavorful - 5 sauce means the album, track, or artist is absolutely fire.
What is XP and how do I earn it?
XP (experience points) tracks how active you are on Yossed. You earn XP by reviewing music, publishing Deep Cuts, posting in communities, getting followers, getting helpful votes, and completing onboarding. Your XP determines your Kitchen Rank. See the Help Center for the full breakdown.
What are Kitchen Ranks?
Kitchen Ranks are 10 tiers from Prep (beginner) to Executive (legend). As you earn XP, you climb ranks: Prep, Commis, Line, Station, Senior, Sous, Chef, Head, Master, Executive. Commis now starts at 250 XP, so onboarding helps you get moving without instantly ranking you up. Each rank has its own color and badge.
What's a beta tester tag?
Users who signed up during beta get a permanent "Beta" tag on their profile. It's a thank-you for being early and helping shape the platform.
How does the Kitchen feed work?
The Kitchen is your personalized feed. It combines reviews from people you follow with algorithmic picks based on your taste profile - the artists you like, the vibes you chose, how you've rated music so far, and the social signals around each take.
What's a taste match percentage?
When you visit someone's profile, you might see a taste match score. This measures how similarly you've rated the same music. Higher percentage = more aligned taste.
How do recommendations improve?
The more you rate, follow, and engage, the better your recommendations get. Your taste profile is built from your favorite artists, selected vibes, ratings, communities, and who you follow.
Can I make group chats?
Yes. Go to Messages, tap New message, and add more than one username in the recipient field. Yossed will turn that into a group chat automatically, and you can add an optional group name before sending the first message.
How do DM streaks work?
Every DM thread has a daily streak. In a one-on-one chat, both people need to send at least one message that day. In a group chat, every member needs to send at least one message that day. If the whole thread checks in, the streak continues. If someone misses a day, the streak resets the next time everyone is active again.
When do DM streaks reset?
DM streaks reset at midnight UTC. Yossed uses one shared reset time so group chats stay consistent even when people live in different time zones.
What are communities?
Communities are groups centered around a shared interest - a genre, a mood, an artist, or any music topic. Each community has a Room for quick posts, Discussions for bigger threads, members, leaders and mods, optional challenges, share cards, and a live heat score. Anyone can browse public communities, and members with 100+ XP can create their own.
Can I create a community?
Yes - once you've earned 100 XP on Yossed. You can check your XP progress on the Communities page. Hit 100 XP and the "Start a community" button unlocks. Give it a name, slug, description, and starting accent color, then add a logo or invite-only settings later if you need them.
What is community heat?
Community heat is Yossed's activity score for a community. Members, posts, discussions, comments, and boosts all add heat. The hotter a community gets, the more it can unlock accent colors and show up in active community areas.
How do community accent colors work?
Every community starts in Bone, Yossed's default warm neutral. As your community earns heat, rarer colors unlock. Pick a color you have not earned yet and Yossed will keep using the last color the community qualified for. The ladder, quietest to hottest:
Bone - Default, free from day one
Cream - 200 heat
Sand - 600 heat
Ember - 1,200 heat
Sunset - 2,500 heat
Amber - 4,500 heat
Saffron - 7,500 heat
Forest - 12,000 heat
Teal - 18,000 heat
Cobalt - 28,000 heat
Purple - 42,000 heat
Magenta - 60,000 heat
Crimson - 85,000 heat
Reaper - Legendary. 100,000 heat
Colors are gated live. Change your accent and the new color paints across your community card, hub, room, threads, and posts site-wide. Lose heat below a threshold and the color drops back to whatever the community most recently qualified for.
How do I grow my community's heat?
Members, active discussions, room posts, comments, boosts, and challenge activity all raise heat. The best way to grow is to post regularly, invite people who care about the topic, and keep the conversation going. A community that feels alive will outrank a bigger but quieter one.
What are Deep Cuts?
Deep Cuts are longer music posts for reviews, rankings, discovery notes, debates, and scene-setting essays. They live outside quick ratings, earn XP when published, and can include album, track, or artist context so people know exactly what you're talking about. Review formatting stays uniform; hyperlinks are supported through pasted links or Command/Ctrl + K.
What is Aftertaste?
Aftertaste is a Yossed product focused on audio identification - specifically, detecting songs even after they've been edited (slowed, sped up, reverbed, etc.). It's designed for labels, platforms, and rights teams. Learn more.
Is Yossed just a consumer app?
Yossed started as a consumer music discovery platform, but we're also building products for the music industry. The consumer app is about taste, reviews, and community; products like Aftertaste focus on audio identification and rights workflows.
How do I reset my password?
